In a sweet endorsement of her fiancé’s acting abilities, Kirsten Dunst says Jesse Plemons, her The Power of the Dog co-star (and father of her children) is her favorite actor to work with. In Jane Campion’s Western The Power of the Dog, the real-life couple play the newly hitched George Burbank and Rose Gordon. When the timid George brings Rose and her teenage son back to the family ranch, his domineering brother Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) harasses and abuses the new members of the Burbank family.
Dunst and Plemons first met on the set of Fargo season 2, which premiered in 2015. An anthology series based on the Coen brothers' film of the same name, season 2 takes place in 1979. Dunst and Plemons again play a young couple, this time tasked with covering up a hit-and-run homicide of a member of a prominent crime family. The couple started dating after the show wrapped. The Power of the Dog marks their first collaboration on the big screen.
In an interview with THR, Dunst confirmed that Plemons is her “favorite actor to work with.” She also noted that The Power of the Dog won’t be the couple’s final collaboration, as they are already planning their next project together. That is, if the actors can fit it into their busy schedules. In addition to upcoming jobs, the actors have two young children at home. Read an excerpt from Dunst’s interview below:
“We actually talked to [Power of the Dog producer] Tanya Seghatchian about what Jesse and I should do next. We have some ideas, and Jesse and I definitely want to do another project. He’s my favorite actor to work with.”
Dunst’s sweet yet considered co-sign of Plemons is all the more impressive given the roster of actors she’s worked with. Her big break, after all, was alongside Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in the 1994 film Interview with the Vampire, not to mention the decades of major projects that followed. But Plemons is a seasoned actor himself, having worked with Paul Thomas Anderson, Steven Spielberg, and Martin Scorsese, among many others.
Plemons and Dunst obviously share great chemistry on screen, but their partnership is also a boon for production costs. Their The Power of the Dog director Jane Campion joked that by hiring the “twofer,” the film was able to save on lodging. Though fans may have to wait for the couple to cook up their next collaboration, Plemons has kept busy. This year the actor also appeared in Judas and the Black Messiah and Jungle Cruise, and he’ll star next in Martin Scorsese’s much-anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro. Given their impressive individual filmographies, whatever the talented couple of Plemons and Dunst decide to collaborate on next is sure to be an exciting project.
